New Melbourne (Russell's Cove) - History Timeline

1861 – A school/chapel is built with Moses Button as the first teacher.

1874 – Russell’s Cove is listed as having a populaton of 137. Family names include: Mansfield, Clarke, Driscoll, Durdle, Goodwin, Harris, Pynn, Reid and Woodland.

1800’s (late) – W.J. Button owns a general store. He eventually succeeds Moses Button as Justice of the Peace for the area.

1905 – Russell's Cove is renamed New Melbourne in honour of Viscount Russell Prime Minister of Britain 1834 - 1841. The "New" is added to differentiate it from Melbourne, Australia.

1921 – W.J. Button owns a cod liver oil factory, a lobster cannery, a sawmill, and Labrador schooners.
- New Melbourne has a population of 377.

1936 (March) – The little girl Lucy Harris, is probably the best-known resident is lost in the woods for 12 days.

1943 – Community leader Nelson Button drowns.

1945 – The collapse of the Labrador fishery and decrease in the local fishery causes the population to decline to 219.
