Upper Island Cove - History Timeline

1775 – Joseph Hussey, a resident of Upper Island Cove claims that his family has been settled there since 1710.

1780 – John Young claims that the land he is settled on has been in his family since 1690. John Crane claims land he is settled on has been in his family since about 1699.

1800 (circa) – Family names in Upper Island Cove include: King, Drover, Pynn, Mercer, Hibbs, Smith, Bishop and Lilly.

1800’s – Some of the planters and their crews from Upper Island Cover are involved in the bank fishery.

1815 – St. Peter’s Church is constructed.

1823 – A school is being operated in the community by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel.

1836 – Upper Island Cove is a major fishing community. The population is recorded as being 522. Most fishermen deal with Thomas Ridley and Punton & Munn firms in Harbour Grace.

1839 – The school in the community is taken over by the Newfoundland School Society.

1842 – A Roman Catholic school is opened.

1860’s – With a lack of useable shore space, catches of cod and herring decrease. Planters move into the Labrador fishery during the following decade.

1871 – The population is recorded as 970. Some residents include: Esau Bishop, John Crane, Thomas Drover, Michael McLean, Archibald Mercer, William Parsons, William Sharp and Joseph Byrne. Byrne was the only full-time farmer.

1901 – The population is recorded as 799.

1920’s and 1930’s – As the Labrador fishery declines, efforts continue in the bank fishery. Western boats from Upper Island Cove also continue to fish in the waters off Ferryland.

1940’s – The population grows to over 1000 residents.

1965 – Spoon Cove becomes a part of the municipality of Upper Island Cove.

1990 - The shore fishery continue and a number of service industries in Conception Bay provide employment.

1994 – Upper Island Cove’s services include: St. Peter’s School, a town hall, a fire department and a medical clinic.
