In 1883 settlement began when the construction of the railway line from St John's reached the area. When the line reached Whitbourne the syndicate constructing the railway across Newfoundland were suffering from financial difficulties. As a result, a decision was made to build a branch line to Harbour Grace from Whitbourne and operate that part of the line on behalf of the syndicate's bondholders. The firm of
Daniel Davenport, who established an office and depot (later a station
hotel) was granted a part of the construction project to build this
railway line. This area was sometimes called Davenport Junction, although
officially it was Harbour Grace Junction. |
