This attic was Emily's refuge. She used it as her bedroom when she needed to rent out her Studio to tenants, she even preferred sleeping here rather than in the bedroom off the Studio. She used it as a hiding place when she spied intrusive guests. Emily Carr would scurry up a "narrow, crooked little stair" in her studio and climb into the attic. From here she could watch the people look in vain for her.
The only way into the two attic rooms (one is above the Doll's House, the other above the Studio) that remains is a small window in the hallway just outside the door to the Doll's House. You must climb a ladder and squeeze through the 2 1/2 foot by 1 1/2 foot opening.
Once through the small opening, you are standing in the room that Emily once lived. This is the room with the eagles. While Emily's way into the attic was through the Studio, it was this room over the Doll's House that was her bedroom.
After all the years, there are still signs that someone once lived up here. There are some pieces of old linoleum still attached to the floor. There is an old Okanagan fruit crate nailed to the wall acting as a shelf. Maybe Emily used this shelf to keep some of her art work or maybe a book she was reading.
A sign of Emily in this room is her own handwriting. On the wall above the entrance is a list of some of Emily's dogs. She wrote down breeding days for the dogs, the births of the puppies, etc. If you look closely you can read Spider's 3rd pups born Aug 21st 1924, Spider bred Jan 23, Fudge bred March 23, etc.
