The Virtual Tour will provide a rare glimpse into the private rooms of the "House of All Sorts".
Each room of the four suites will be illustrated through various photographs both present day and archival. Using a collection of quotes taken from Emily's book The House of All Sorts, and descriptive text, the tour will explore how each room, suite or garden was uniquely significant to Emily. The tour will also reveal the hardships Emily endured during her 23 years as a struggling artist and landlady of the "House of All Sorts".
The "House of All Sorts" is currently a private apartment house as Emily Carr had originally intended it to be.
There are four occupied suites in the house and one additional suite in the basement, which is currently used as a storage area by the owner of the house, Margaret Chantreau. The attic is still accessible where one can view Emily's eagles and frog motifs which stretch across the ceiling.
During the course of its 87 year history, the house has undergone numerous changes and alterations both structurally and cosmetically. Only the two lower suites, Lower East and Lower West, escaped any serious structural changes.
Unfortunately, the second floor originally intended to be Emily's apartment /studio, has been extensively renovated. Hopefully, the "House of All Sorts" will one day be restored back to its original state with 12 foot ceilings, working fireplaces and a large studio space where Emily once painted.
