Emily Carr rented out the Lower West Flat for the majority of the time she occupied the "House of All Sorts". It wasn't until 1932 when both the Lower West and East Flats fell simultaneously vacant would the suite serve a different purpose other than making a home for her sometimes undesired tenants.
Emily decided to create a gallery for the 'People'. A place where a variety of art could be shown. From modern to conservative. From paintngs to pottery. A gallery for people from all walks of life.
Emily had a door constructed between the two lower flats which created a large, spacious, six- room gallery.
She held a small exhibition to promote her "People's Gallery" but she received little financial support and found Victoria to be lacking in interest.
Emily's idea of her "People's Gallery" faded into a brief memory. Due to the state of the economy, it was a poor time to start any business venture such as a gallery and it was an even worse time to let two suites lie vacant.
Emily decided to lock the connecting door of the lower suites and fill the flats with paying tenants.
