In Search
of the Canadian Identity

Time: 1-2 Periods

Expectations:
Students will:

  • continue thinking about the characteristics that define a hero;
  • begin thinking about the characteristics that define the Canadian Identity;
  • participate in small and large group discussions;
  • complete and submit Project Worksheet 2 ;
  • continue development of a Canadian Heroes Folder to
  • monitor their progress.

Materials:

  1. Project Worksheet 2
  2. Markers and foolscap paper

Lesson Plan:

  1. Divide students into small groups (size of groups will depend on class size).
  2. Have student brainstorm on the characteristics of the Canadian Identity (possible topics: movies, books, comics, TV, current events, history, philosophy, politics, science, First Nations, radio, music, women, war
    veterans, ...)
  3. Have students create a Mindmap (distribute markers and foolscap paper).
    This Mindmap requires students to write the word Canadian Identity in the center of the page and create relevant branches linking their thought process with related themes.
  4. Regroup and create a class definition of the Canadian Identity:
    • What it means to be Canadian and the characteristics that define heroism.
  5. Have students complete and submit Project Worksheet 2.
  6. Have students continue development of their Canadian Heroes Folder to monitor their progress.

Evaluation Opportunities:

  1. Teacher observation of participation in group and class discussions.
  2. Individual submissions of Project Worksheet 2.

  2. How would you define the Canadian Identity? What constitutes the Canadian Identity? What symbols, people, sports teams, politicians, philosophers, themes, foods, movies, books, do you associate with Canada, or consider strictly Canadian in origin and/or content. Please provide at least five (5) examples and explain why you made each selection.

  3. You are a judge on the panel that selects recipients for the Order of Canada Award. Part of your responsibility is to determine whether or not each candidate is a true Canadian. You will have to judge whether or not their past actions and beliefs have displayed qualities worthy of Canada's highest honor of recognition. What criteria will you apply when you read their biographies? What qualities, values, actions will you base your decision on? Please explain your answer in a paragraph discussing at least five (5) factors that will influence your decision.

  4. On the next page create a mindmap combining your criteria and definitions for a Canadian Hero.  Place the words:  CANADIAN HERO in the centre of a blank page and branch off from there.
