LESSON FIVE

French-Native Relations

Time: One period (40 minutes)

Expectations:
Students will:

  • critically analyze video media.
  • develop an appreciation of the helpful interaction of the Native community with the new French settlers.
  • work in teams to create mind maps.
  • use the Internet as a written source of information.
  • record information from the Internet.
  • evaluate certain contributions to traditional Québecois culture

Preparation:

Lesson Plan:

  1. Play the CRB's Heritage Minute "Sirop." Tell the students to pay very careful attention to the interaction between the people, as they will be discussing the video in detail.  You may want to tell them to think about answering the questions who, what , where, when, why and how as a guideline for their observations.  You might also suggest that they jot notes down if that will help them.  You may want to play the video a couple of times for best results.
  2. Divide the class into groups of three.  Have the groups create mind maps of what they saw and what they have learned so far in this unit about New France.
  3. While students are working on their mind maps, have some groups take turns on the computer completing the handout  "One Woman's Role in French-Native Relations".
  4. Summarize the lesson by discussing how both Native and French People taught and helped each other.

Evaluation Opportunities:

  • teacher evaluation of mind maps
  • teacher and/or student evaluation of student worksheet
