LESSON SEVEN

Final - Tableau

Time: two periods (80 minutes)

Expectations:
Students will:

  • consolidate and review their knowledge of New France
  • participate in an historical dramatization in the form of tableau
  • use appropriate vocabulary (seigneury, Aboriginal People, Natives, Fur Trade, Hudson's Bay Company, pelts, etc.)

Preparation:

  • As a class (during this class), create scenes for tableaux, using themes given below, which highlight significant elements of the unit of study.
  • photocopy teacher evaluation sheets

Lesson Plan:

  1. Explain the concept of "tableau" as a still picture of a scene acted out by people.  Props and scenery are quite minimal and people serve as the actors, and even as props and scenery sometimes. There is a one or two sentence description of the tableau announced to the audience when presenting.  The rest of the information is presented visually and kinesthetically in the tableau.
  2. Divide class into five equal sized groups.  Have each group create their own scenes using their knowledge gained from this unit on New France centering on the following themes of sample tableaux ideas:
    • Conditions of the journey to New France
    • The Meeting of the French and the Aboriginal Peoples (The Naming of Canada and Sirop are good examples.)
    • A Fur Trade Expedition
    • Life on the Seigneury (farming: sowing, harvesting; gathering food, cooking)
    • Life on the Seigneury (relations between the habitant and the seigneur)
  3. Have students practice tableau the first day and present and evaluate the next day.

Evaluation Opportunities:

  • teacher evaluation of tableaux (all students in the same group get the same mark)
