Life on the Seigneury

Time: Two periods (80 minutes)

Expectations:
Students will:

  • extract and record information from a primary source.
  • work as a team.
  • present their research results to their classmates.

Preparation:

Lesson Plan:

  1. Divide the students into five equal sized groups.  Distribute photocopies of the Journal of Gilles Coutourier to each student and an acetate and overhead markers (or chart paper and markers) to each group.
  2. Have the students read the journal as a group.  Assign one of the following topics to each group to examine:
    • Living Conditions on the Seigneury
    • Native-French Relations
    • Working Conditions on the Seigneury
    • Conditions while Traveling and Exploring
    • "Business" Relations (pertaining to interactions with the Seigneur and to trading)
Have the students take turns and record, in point form, the salient information from the journals onto the acetates or chart paper.
  3. Have each group present their findings to the class.  This information, as well as any additions you, as the teacher, wish to make will serve as class notes on the way of life on the Seigneury.

Evaluation Opportunities:
