Eleanor Milne was Canada's first official Dominion Sculptor from 1961 to 1993, succeeding previous dominion carvers. Contributing many elements to the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings she created stone carvings of the History of Canada, the British North America Act (name changed in 1987 to the Constitutional Law of 1867), and the Origin of Life in Canada, with the help of her carvers and assistants, one of whom is the current Federal Sculptor. Milne designed stained glass windows for the House of Commons, and oversaw the restoration of the linen ceiling of the House. She has been the recipient of awards and honours since she began studying art. Milne's career as an artist began with the encouragement of her family, and she found inspiration during her art training at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts School of Art and Design, the London County Council College of Graphic Art, l'École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, and her graduate studies with Ivan Mestrovic at Syracuse University. During this time she specialized in book illustration, bronze casting, and sculpture. After completing her schooling she worked as an independent artist in Canada in various media, particularly sculpture and stained glass, often creating religious art. Eleanor Milne's continuing interests are diverse, and she continues to play an active role in the Canadian art world. |
