Vesuvianite is named for its discovery locality. It was found in volcanic blocks ejected from Mount Vesuvius, Italy. This lovely specimen of violet and green vesuvianite comes form Asbestos, Quebec, more commonly known for the mining of asbestos. Vesuvianite was, and often still is, known as idocrase.
