This specimen of quartz was found in Bourg d'Oisans, Dauphiné, France, a famous location for collecting "rock crystal". This transparent form of quartz is more colloquially known as "rock quartz". The name "rock crystal" is derived from its resemblance to a crystal of ice with the exception of being as hard as rock. The best material comes from Brazil, but alpine locations, such as this French locale, are home to fine specimens as well.
