This specimen of quartz, showcased here with hematite, is from Cleator Moor, Cumberland, England. The name "scarlet quartz" obviously comes from its deep red or scarlet color. Like "rock crystal", "scarlet quartz" has the chemical composition of SiO2. Where "rock crystal" is mainly "pure" SiO2, "scarlet quartz" during its formation receives many minute inclusions or impurities that give it its red color. Other quartzes that have color variations for this same reason are citrine, amethyst, rose quartz and smoky quartz.
