The Museum was a fun place where lots of unusual items could be viewed. If you take a close look at this photograph, you will see some shells hanging on the wall in the background. You might be wondering what they did with all these shells? It seems the students enjoyed making arrangements from them, which they displayed behind glass (look closely at the display case).

I'll bet they enjoyed days at the beach collecting them, along with other interesting finds. Sometimes they included crab shells in their arrangements. Over the years, many unique objects were added to the museum. Among these were a collection of silver spoons, deep sea sponges, a grass skirt, an axe, a cedar beater, souvenirs from Tahiti, a sword from the headhunters of Borneo, a feather cape and the first printing press in BC! What a collection! When the school closed this unique collection found several new homes.

How did all of these strange objects get there? Well, many of them were donated by parents of the students, and by people in the community who picked things up in their travels.

Activity

When archaeologists discover interesting artifacts, they sketch them first, and then write a description of the object. They try to understand what meaning the object had and what it was used for. What interesting objects can you find in your house or in your classroom? Draw a sketch of something, and write a story about it. Where did it come from? What meaning does it have to you?
