Early Students of St. Ann's Academy, 1928

here was more than just classes and homework to life at St. Ann’s Academy. Many students boarded at the school, and in the letters and stories that have been left behind, the students talk about many moments of mischief, laughter and tears. Other things like poetry, artwork and scrapbooks also give clues to how the students lived, and what their experiences were like at the convent.

Some of the things that affected student life, have to do with the historical period. In the early days, there was no electricity or many other of the technological advantages that we enjoy today. Secondly, the rules and goals of the school were different from those of today, as were some of the classes that were taken. And finally, students brought with them their own cultural heritage and diverse backgrounds - some students were from local communities while others traveled quite a distance to attend the school. As you read through these sections about the history and the people of early Victoria, you’ll get a clearer picture of what student life was like in the 1800’s! Do you think it has changed much?
