The Atlantic Maritime ecozone, which includes the Maritimes and southwest Quebec, is subject to the influence of the ocean. Therefore the climate is somewhat cooler and wetter than in the St. Lawrence Valley. Forests cover 70% of this zone: red spruce and balsam poplar mix with yellow birch and sugar maple. Pine and hemlock are also sometimes encountered here, along with a few colder species, such as poplar. This forest is home to a variety of small and large mammals, ranging from moose and white-tailed deer to skunks, black bears and lynx. On the edges of the sea cliffs, colonies of cormorants, murres, northern gannets, razorbills and other marine birds make their nests.
