  An evolving parliamentary system

The House of Commons sits for approximately 135 days a year. The seven periods of adjournment in the parliamentary calendar allow MPs to keep in close touch with their home constituencies. Sittings begin in September and usually continue until June. The Senate sits for approximately 70 days a year. Both MPs and senators meet regularly to deal with national issues and to consider departmental and legislative action.
