The Government of Canada maintains responsibility for the funding of education for Aboriginal children, as well as for the children of members of Canada's armed forces.

Though the costs of education in our territories are borne by the federal government, the territorial assemblies have legislative responsibility over their respective school systems.

The federal government has little direct involvement in the daily operation of Native education in reserve schools, acting only as a funding agent by contracting with local agencies, band councils or provincial school jurisdictions to provide educational services.
