  An evolving parliamentary system

There are standing committees in the Senate and in the House of Commons, as well as joint committees made up of members from both the Commons and the Senate. All these committees last for one parliamentary session. The committees oversee the operations and expenditure budgets of government departments and examine particular areas of federal policy as well as enactments. They must also make sure that the policies and programs presented to them are valid and effective.
