George Vancouver: A Coast for the English King
After
Even though Vancouver's expedition was successful, few praised him. This may be because his crew thought he was a cruel commander. Some historians believe that this may have been because of a sickness he had, called hyperthyroidism, that made him get angry easily. He retired in 1795 and died two years later at the age of 40.
Healing Waters
Vancouver's last voyage had ruined his health. He went to recover at a spa at Bristol Hot Wells. At that time, people would travel to places with natural springs. They believed that soaking in these waters would cure all kinds of things. But the healing waters didn't help Vancouver.

Retiring in Petersham, England, Vancouver settled down to write about his voyages. He was almost finished when he died, in May 1798. His brother John finished the book and it was published a few months later.
