George Vancouver: A Coast for the English King

Transportation

Graphical element: The ship Discovery on the rocks

Vancouver sailed in many ships in his life, including Captain Cook's famous ships HMS Discovery and HMS Resolution. These were small sailing ships called sloops. He later became commander of Discovery. She carried 14 cannons and had 100 crewmen.

Ouch!
We know from the Discovery's log book that Vancouver ordered lashings. On September 14, 1791, he ordered one of his men to be given ten lashes for disobeying orders. Such floggings, lashings on their bare backs, were common at this time.
