Who discovered and explored the land we now call Canada? Was it the Native people who were living here or the Europeans who came over the ocean in search of adventure and riches?

The National Library of Canada's Passageways: True Tales of Adventure for Young Explorers website gives the answers to these questions. The activity below will show you how to get around on the website and will give you a chance to research the adventures of one explorer.

Follow the instructions and answer questions 1 to 13 in your books or on a piece of paper. Remember to write full and proper sentences!

A. Write the name of your explorer here and in your book: _______________

Go to the "Explorers Index" page:
Find the name of your explorer and click.

B. You will see that there are different sections for each explorer in the left margin. You can go to each section by clicking on the name of the section or by following the "NEXT" buttons at the bottom of each page.

C. Answer the questions below.

1. Where and when was this explorer born? (2 marks)

2. Where did the explorer go on his first voyage of exploration? (1 mark)

3. If he had a second voyage, where did he go? Was he looking for the same thing as the first voyage? (2) If your explorer did not have a second voyage, skip to question 5 and your paper will be marked out of 17.

4. If he had a third voyage, where did he go? Was he looking for the same thing as the first two voyages? (2) If your explorer did not have a third voyage, skip to the next question and your paper will be marked out of 19.

5. What dangers did your explorer face on his voyages? Name at least two. (2)

6. What Native people did your explorer meet or travel with? (1)

7. If your explorer met Native people, were he and the Native people friendly towards each other? How do you know? (2)

8. Was there anything besides exploration that your explorer wanted (like gold or to start a colony)? What was it? (2)

9. Did the explorer succeed in his goals? (1)

10. Did other people learn from and use this explorer's discoveries? If yes, how? (2)

11. When and how did he die? (1)

12. What else, if anything, did this explorer accomplish (e.g. books written, inventions, set an example of how to care for men)? (1)

13. What kind of transportation did this explorer use? (2)
