SEXUAL ORIENTATION IS NOW READ INTO THE HUMAN RIGHTS LEGISLATION.
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?

While it is true that sexual orientation is now being read into the Alberta human rights legislation, thanks to the tenacity of Delwin Vriend and his supporters, there are many areas of law that are not covered by this legislation. Family law is one such area. The Conservative Caucus, in an effort to placate the well-organized and well-financed opposition to the Vriend decision, is seeking to put up “fences” around various pieces of legislation in order to preserve what the ultra- conservative factions call the”traditional” or “natural” family. This means that they are prepared to fight any attempts by gay and lesbian parents to adopt or foster children.

WHAT IS THE LMSS ADOPTION TRUST FUND?

The Lesbian Mothers Support Society has set up a trust fund that will help defray the costs of any lesbian parent, adoptive or foster, who is forced to go to court to win the right to be recognized.

To take these cases forward will be costly. Should the government choose to intervene, the legal fees would skyrocket, as expert witnesses would have to be brought in from out of province in order to testify. Success in these cases would not only mean a personal triumph for these families, but would provide the means for other lesbian and gay parents, both adoptive and foster, to finally achieve recognition for their families. There are many other such families awaiting the outcomes of these cases. The Trust Fund hopes to be able to provide support for them also.
