Finding Data on Women: A Guide to Major Sources at Statistics Canada
By Marcia Almey, Statistics Canada,
published by Status of Women Canada.
Free in print and online.
This new 144 page handbook is a carefully explained and compiled overview
of where to look up Statistics Canada information on women. One section is
given over to Statistics Canada new initiatives, including a planned survey
on unpaid work. Another is titled “Diversity” offering a range of sources,
although heavily dependent on the Census and post Census surveys.
The Violence Against Women survey of 12,300 women is described and follow
up sources of information are given along with the titles of a few
analytical papers. We are also given a bibliography, glossary, contacts, a
summary of surveys - but no index.
While this very useful publication is available free of charge, many of the
survey results are no longer free. The book gives us details on where to
start finding the data about ourselves and our sisters, information we gave
freely to surveys and the Census, but we are still going to have to pay for
many of the facts.
