Internet Connectivity in Public Libraries

These statistics on the number of Canadian public library service points that are connected to the Internet were compiled in June, 1998.

In all of Canada, there are 3484 public library service points, of which 2153 provide the general public with access to the Internet and another 32 provide access to library staff only, for a total of 2185 connected libraries.

In Alberta there are 310 public library service points, of which 72 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access to library staff only, for a total of 72 connected libraries.

In British Columbia there are 231 public library service points, of which 208 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access to library staff only, for a total of 208 connected libraries.

In Manitoba there are 108 public library service points, of which 83 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 83 connected libraries.

In New Brunswick there are 61 public library service points, of which 32 provide the public with access to the Internet and 2 provide access only to library staff, for a total of 34 connected libraries.

In Newfoundland there are 97 public library service points, of which 56 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 56 connected libraries.

In Nova Scotia there are 75 public library service points, all 75 of which provide the public with access to the Internet for a total of 75 connected libraries.

In the Northwest Territories there are 19 public library service points, of which 7 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 7 connected libraries.

In Ontario there are 1192 public library service points, of which 613 provide the public with access to the Internet and another 30 provide access only to library staff, for a total of 643 connected libraries.

In Prince Edward Island there are 22 public library service points, all 22 of which provide the public with access to the Internet, for a total of 6 connected libraries.

In Quebec there are 1029 public library service points, of which 824 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 824 connected libraries.

In Saskatchewan there are 323 public library service points, of which 154 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 154 connected libraries.

In Yukon there are 17 public library service points, of which 7 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 7 connected libraries.


Note: A service point is defined as any individual library branch/location or bookmobile unit.
