The Fear of Asking
This may be the most difficult part of fundraising, but also the most important! It is also the fastest way to raise funds. Grants and fundraising events take much time and planning, whereas once you have developed a solid relationship with a donor, the "ASK" is simple. The point to note here is that you must have developed a solid relationship with a donor before you ask for a donation.
Look at the source of our fears:
Many people believe that it is "bad" or "wrong' to ask for money. Because of some lessons we are taught while young, situations involving money can often create feelings of guilt, distrust, disgust, or even hostility towards other people or ourselves.
Even though most people have issues with asking for money, it is important to remember that asking for money for a good fundraiser is alright/o.k. A good fundraiser has a solid relationship with his or her donor and is sensitive to his or her needs.
Still, it is important to recognize when it is a good time to ask for money and when it is not. For example, if a donor has just lost significant funds in the stock market, it may not be an appropriate time to ask. On the other hand, if a potential donor is looking for something new and exciting in life, it may be just the right time to get them involved in your project. Basically, it comes down to respect, understanding and your own ability to judge the right time.
