Camp and Surrounding Area

The construction camp was the place where all of the people involved in building were accommodated. The camp was located in a wooded area near a steep hill, forming the west side of the gorge overlooking the main dam. Modern comfortable living quarters were provided to the 850 men who worked on construction. All who worked there were engineers, diamond drill crews, office staff, kitchen help, shovel runners, drivers, and labourers. There were state of the art, insulated buildings, hot and cold running water, and a cafeteria that served up to 550 persons at one time. Crawley and McCracken Limited took care of the beds and linens. The workers were given seasonal recreation such as: hockey, iceskating, baseball, and other season sports. They were also shown movies twice a week in a meeting hall that was also used for religious services.
