Georgetown

Population: 387 (1996)
315 (1981)

An incorporated inland community located south of Brigus. Georgetown was founded by residents of Bull Cove, which is now an abandoned settlement which was once situated in the coast southeast of Brigus. Georgetown was a close distance to the railway branch to Harbour Grace and also the main road connecting Conception Bay to St. John's. According to Mrs. Walter Walsh (quoted in the Newfoundland Historical Society: Georgetown), the first known settlers to Georgetown were Stephen Sparkes and Thomas Youden, from Bull Cove.

Farming was undertaken at Georgetown, which is mainly low-lying, arable land which once was well forested. A sawmill was built on the river running from Long Pond into Three Mile Pond by a resident by the name of Clarke. Another resident, George Chalker developed the lumbering industry.
