Population: 141 (1996) Located about 10 kms northeast of Carbonear, on the Conception Bay north shore is the community of Kingston. Two of the earliest settlers are John King and Timothy O'Leary who are recorded as being settled there in 1793. O'Leary eventually establishes mercantile premises at upper and lower Small Point. In the 1857 census the community is listed as Upper Small Point. However, in the early 1900's it was renamed to Kingston in honor of one of its' earliest families. In 1921 census the population of Kingston peaked at 195. As the local and Labrador fisheries experienced failures many people chose to move to the North American mainland, some turned to farming, while others found employment in nearby Carbonear, Harbour Grace, and St. Johns. |
