New Melbourne

Population: 78 (1996)
101 (1986)

Located about 12km southwest of Old Perlican across Lance Cove Bight is the community of New Melbourne. From Old Perlican, it is visible and it saw some seasonal use by the residents before becoming a permanent settlement. Tradition tells that New Melbourne has its first year-round settlers in the mid-1800's who moved to the north end of the community from New Chelsea after using it during the winter for woods work. Original settlers of New Melbourne (mostly Methodists) came from Old Perlican, Hant's Harbour and New Chelsea.

The Orange Lodge built in the later 1800's was used by the Orangemen from Old Perlican to Hant's Harbour on occasions because it was the largest in the area.

New Melbourne's economy was based on the local shore fishery as well as the Labrador Fishery and some farming.

Since the second World War, New Melbourne has seen a decline in the population with very few people still fishing and most found work in Old Perlican and Hant's Harbour at their fish plants.

High-school students attend school in Brownsdale, lower grades in Hant's Harbour and most other services are made available in Old Perlican.
