This is a view of the south-eastern part of the village. The Arran Scots established their camp on the north shore of Lake Joseph (then called Loch Lomond) in 1829 to spend the first winter, before they could take possession of their lands. We call this place the "Scots Settlement". In 1919 a monument was erected near the lake to mark the place where some 70 people were buried before they had a chance to build the first church . When they established the first congregations they moved the graves into the new cemeteries, and gave them a stone monument instead of the wooden cross they had at the burying ground. Unfortunately, some have been forgotten and never made it to the new grounds.
