THE VELVET-WRAPPED EGG
A Roedde Family Treasure

Nowadays, if we want to give a friend or loved one a gift, we often go to the store and buy something. Gustav's velvet-lined Easter eggAt the turn of the century, people were more likely to make their own gifts. Gustav Roedde made some remarkable gifts for his daughters and granddaughters, in the form of velvet-lined Easter eggs.

Gustav would take an egg shell, carefully cut it in half, put a lining on the inside, and wrap the outside in velvet. A tiny surprise was the finishing touch. opening the egg reveals a miniature china dollThe older girls discovered a small bottle of perfume inside their eggs; the younger girls found a miniature china doll.
