Cupids
The first official English settlement in what is now Canada was established at Cupids (then known as Cupers Cove) Conception Bay in 1610. The site of the colony was discovered in 1995 during an archaeological survey and excavations have been ongoing at the site since that time. Over the last seven years the remains of four early 17th century structures and over 80,000 artifacts have been uncovered. A fifth structure, excavated in 2000, may be a 17th century structure that was reused in the 19th century. Archaeological evidence indicates that while a portion of the settlement was destroyed by fire in the 1660s, the site was occupied throughout the 17th century.
