Located in a large open cove (Whitless Bay), in southern Trinity Bay is the fishing community of Whiteway.

Until the early 1900's the community was known as Whitless or Whitlers Bay, until it was renamed in honor of former Prime Minister William Whiteway to avoid confusion with Whitless Bay on the Southern Shore.

Whiteway was not settled until the mid-1800s because it was located far from the best fishing grounds in Trinity Bay.

In the nineteenth century, the Labrador fishery supported most families, however, there was also a shore fishery for cod.

Salmon and lobster were also important local catches in the early 1900's, and logging provided important seasonal employment.

In the second half of the twentieth century (latter half), the population showed modest growth, as fish plants in the Dildo-New Harbour area provided employment.
