Many of our earliest memories are often connected to objects - a particular toy, a comfort blanket, a prized item of apparel. This aspect of the curriculum encourages students to look at their own personal artifacts, at the treasures and stories of others, at everyday objects that may become obsolete with the passage of time, and at the various ways artifacts may be valued. This information provides a broader perspective for the question, "Why is it important for people to remember the past?" General Objectives: The purpose of these exercises is to help students develop skills in accurate drawing and description of artifacts/objects. They will learn to make reasonable guesses (hypotheses) and check them out. They will also have opportunities to become aware of and discuss concepts such as change and progress. The three pages of "Learning from Objects" questions will help students examine an artifact in terms of its physical features, its construction, its function, design and value. Answers to these questions and clues to analyzing the artifacts come from observing and researching. Only then is it possible to draw meaningful conclusions about the identity and use of an unfamiliar artifact. Students are encouraged to use precise, descriptive words when examining the artifact and in writing down their findings. Modelling the observation/recording process with the entire class should prove helpful before having students work on their own or in smaller groups.
