MAPPING EARLY VANCOUVER
Hastings Townsite
Return to Mapping section
Captain Edward Stamp founded Hastings Mill in 1865. Hastings Mill Store is still standing today; it was one of the few buildings which survived the great fire in 1886. Around the mill grew Hastings Townsite, a settlement of single men who worked at the Mill and in associated industries. It was a rowdy and dilapidated collection of shacks.
Hastings Townsite continued to grow rapidly but stayed very much a working class settlement as opposed to the West End. In 1911, Hastings Townsite became part of Greater Vancouver. Hastings Street, which is near the downtown core, continues to be home to many of the low income residents of Vancouver. (Roy, 1980)
