Often mistaken for the red squirrel, the chipmunk can be distinguished by its smaller body frame, and the set of black stripes running down its back.

Most of the time when you spot this little critter he will have his cheeks stuffed with food that he is busily collecting for the winter season. A chipmunk can store away enough food for an entire life-time in one season. It is said they act this way because of an obsessive genetic fear of starvation. Chipmunks prefer to live in hardwood forests, in burrows the size of footballs.

The chipmunk, if tamed by humans in the past will take peanuts from your hand. However, because of their fear of starvation they never fully rely on humans for food supply. So, if you are staying at a cabin in the Mississagi Valley you will more than likely have a few chipmunks knocking at your door for peanuts or sunflower seeds.
