FROM THE DESK OF Alain Pineau: What’s happening with the CCA?

CCA Bulletin 29/11 October 24, 2011 I am back from pre-consultation sessions in Toronto and Montréal, with my head full of the several expressions of support and the constructive suggestions offered, and I realize that I have not communicated with you in a long time.  I can assure you that it is not because we have been idle at the CCA during the past month, far from it! I will come back to the consultation process at the end of this bulletin, but first, here is a quick wrap-up of highlights of...

Cultural funding: where will the axe fall?

CCA Bulletin 27/11 September 12, 2011 Just the facts The Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) today presents its analysis of the 2011 federal budget, which was adopted in June by the 41st Parliament, further to the May general election.   Like last year, this year’s budget analysis reveals that overall, federal funding to the cultural sector remains stable, which has more or less been the case since 2006 under successive Conservative minority governments. While the CCA...

The CCA urges the government to invest in a renewable resource: culture

CCA Bulletin 26/11 August 11, 2011   Just the Facts Today, the Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) submitted its 2012 pre-budget submission to the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Finance. In consultation with our membership, we encourage the government to maintain and if possible, increase its investments in Canadian artistic creativity, a renewable, non-polluting natural resource that contributes greatly to the economy, to our quality of life and to our...

Canadian programming: the CRTC returns to regulation

CCA Bulletin 25/11 August 8, 2011 The CRTC requires private English television service providers to support the production of domestic programming, including “programs of national interest” such as drama or comedy series, documentaries and awards shows that promote Canadian culture. Following the group-based licence renewal process, the CRTC now requires Bell Media, Corus Entertainment and Shaw Media to devote at least 30% of their gross annual revenues to Canadian programming...

FROM THE DESK of Alain Pineau: The CCA enters summer on a high note

CCA  Bulletin 23/11 June 27, 2011 Last week, on the very day of its 66th anniversary, the CCA held its June board meeting in Ottawa, leading up to the first day of summer. Outgoing and new incoming board members engaged in an extremely stimulating strategic conversation on the future direction of the CCA.  This was a larger group than usual, bringing many regions, disciplines and perspectives to the conversation. Among other topics, the board discussed the role that advocacy...

Culture: what should go into the next federal budget?

CCA Bulletin 24/11 July 11, 2011 Culture: what should go into the next federal budget? As is the case each summer, the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Finance has launched its annual national consultation on what should be included or excluded in the next federal budget. This year’s process is taking place in parallel with the secretive Strategic and Operational Review which is currently underway within all government departments and agencies. The objective of the review is...

Who will be on the Heritage Standing Committee?

CCA Bulletin 22/11 June 15, 2011 Just the Facts The 41st Parliament resulting from the May 2 general election is getting set up. While a number of MPs are still moving in and out of their offices, reflecting the sea of changes that has brought 111 new members to Parliament Hill, responsibilities are slowly being assigned. On June 13, we learned a bit more with the announcement of the various standing committees in the House of Commons. Understandably, the CCA is...

Throne Speech and Federal Budget: it’s almost business as usual

CCA Bulletin 21/11 June 7, 2011   Just the Facts On Friday, June 3, the Governor General gave a speech from the throne heralded by many as primarily ceremonial. The speech toed a safe line without introducing any new drastic policy measures, and we saw the same approach again in yesterday’s tabling of the federal budget by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. James Flaherty. Minister Flaherty tabled his second 2011 federal budget, The Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action...

CCA Bulletin 20/11 June 2, 2011     Summer was with us at the beginning of the week, but it’s cold grey weather that marks the return of our Parliamentarians to Ottawa, to the start of Canada’s 41st Parliament. Today, our members of Parliament will vote by secret ballot to elect a new Speaker of the House of Commons. This may take quite a few rounds of voting… or not! Tomorrow afternoon, the Governor General will go to Parliament to deliver his first Speech from the Throne, in which...
